Studio Equipment

Studio owner and jazz saxophonist Josh Kemp has built the studio from an interest in and appreciation of the rich sound of quality recording equipment.

Everything has been selected to the highest standards, including our own Valve microphone containing an original Neumann M7 capsule as would have been used by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra (pictured right). We also have pairs of Neumann M930s and KM130s and wide range of warm-charactered microphones, valve and solid-state to flatter your band's sound.

Monitoring is on our beautiful Quested vs2108 speakers (Hans Zimmer's choice), with back-up from Adam A-7s and Sennheiser's top of the line HD650 headphones. There is a headphone distribution system so that every musician can create their own headphone mix when recording. The studio benefits from custom-built equipment throughout, Preamps, Compressors, EQ and have all been specially commissioned to be built exactly to our requirements.

There is a large selection of outboard gear to suit all projects. This includes a rack of warm pre-amps from an 80s NEVE ‘V’ series desk, cleaner-toned D&R Dutch Broadcast Micamps, and custom-built re-creations of the famous NEVE 1073 channel strips.

Mixdown at Full Tone is either analogue through our 1980s AMEK BCII mixing desk, 26-8-2 with a wide selection of outboard; or digital, using Logic 9 running on an Intel Mac.

Pride of place in the Studio goes to our 1970s Studer A80RC mastering recorder. Once you have run your mixes through this, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to work in a tape-free environment again.
